His life derailed after his 1907 divorce and subsequent sale of his studio. He disappeared, was later arrested for assault, and apparently spent time working as a janitor. His mother killed herself by setting her bed on fire, and he attempted suicide at least twice. He was treated at Bellevue and was later institutionalized as a psychiatric patient in Manhattan State Hospital, Wards Island.
